CIA whistleblower Kiriakou gets posh send-off to prison

21 Feb 2013 John Kiriakou stood in the ninth-floor banquet hall of the Hay-Adams hotel Thursday night and took in the spectacular view of the White House and the Washington Monument. He recalled briefing two presidents during his career with the CIA. “It’s ironic,” he said, spreading his arms as if to embrace the tableau. “This really is the reason I came to Washington 30 years ago in the first place.” But next Thursday he will check into the Federal Correctional Institution in Loretto, Pa., to begin a 30-month sentence for divulging information that prosecutors said could harm his country [while the torturers, their handlers, and actual architects of the 9/11 inside job -- Bush-Cheney -- are free].

U.S. troops arrive in Niger to set up drone base

22 Feb 2013 President Obama announced Friday that about 100 U.S. troops have been deployed to the West African country of Niger, where defense officials said they are setting up a drone base to spy on al-Qaeda [al-CIAduh] fighters in the Sahara. It was the latest step by the Pentagon to increase its intelligence-gathering across Africa in response to what officials see as a rising threat from militant groups. In a letter to Congress, Obama said about 40 U.S. service members arrived in Niger on Wednesday, bringing the total number of troops based there to “approximately” 100.

100 US forces sent to Niger to support French troops in Mali: Obama

22 Feb 2013 US President Barack Obama says at least 100 American military personnel have been dispatched to Niger to support French troops battling fighters in neighboring Mali. “This deployment will provide support for intelligence collection and will also facilitate intelligence sharing with French forces conducting operations in Mali, and with other partners in the region. The total number of U.S. military personnel deployed to Niger is approximately 100,” said Obama on Friday. Reports say that the US troops will also set up a drone base in the African country.s

F-35 fighter jet fleet grounded by Pentagon

22 Feb 2013 The US has grounded its entire fleet of 51 F-35 fighter jets after the discovery of a cracked engine blade. The fault was detected during a routine inspection of an air force version of the jet (F-35A) at Edwards Air Force Base in California, said the Pentagon. Different versions are flown by the navy and the marine corps. All have been grounded. The F-35 is the Pentagon’s most expensive weapons programme, with a cost of nearly $400bn (£260bn).

Siberian permafrost thaw warning sparked by cave data

22 Feb 2013 Evidence from Siberian caves suggests that a global temperature rise of 1.5C could see permafrost thaw over a large area of Siberia. A study shows that more than a trillion tonnes of the greenhouse gases CO2 and methane could be released into the atmosphere as a result. An international team haspublished details in the journal Science. The evidence comes from analysis of stalactites and stalagmites in caves along the “permafrost frontier”.

Duluth’s polar bear Berlin relishes snowstorm in Kansas City

22 Feb 2013 A snowstorm seems to be making Berlin, the polar bear from Duluth, feel at home in Kansas City. The Kansas City area got walloped on Thursday. A foot of snow fell by noon, closing roads, schools and the airport, the Kansas City Star reported online. The Kansas City Zoo also shut down for the day…but one resident was having a lovely day. “Due to the weather the zoo is closed today,” the zoo’s webpage advised in red letters. It added: “(But Berlin is loving the snow!)”

Sociopaths run amok: Switzerland’s only wild bear is killed as ‘danger to humans’ –Bear called M13 ‘was in no way a problem bear,’ says conservation group expert

21 Feb 2013 M13 was the only bear known to have been living wild in Switzerland, according to the Swiss national broadcaster. Despite that status, the young male was shot Tuesday morning in Poschiavo Valley, in the Alps near the Italian border, by authorities terrorists who ‘feared’ he was a threat to people. The Swiss branch of the World Wildlife Fund environmental campaign group said it was “extremely disappointed” that the bear was killed.

Wash. state governor: 6 underground nuclear tanks leaking –An estimated 1 million gallons of radioactive liquid already leaked

22 Feb 2013 Six underground tanks that hold a brew of radioactive and toxic waste at the nation’s most contaminated nuclear site are leaking, federal and state officials said Friday. State officials just last week announced that one of Hanford’s 177 underground tanks was leaking 150 to 300 gallons a year, posing a risk to groundwater and rivers. Hanford’s tanks hold some 53 million gallons of highly radioactive waste, and many of those tanks are known to have leaked in the past.

Thousands May Have Been Exposed to Deadly TB Epidemic in Los Angeles –Feds descending on downtown LA to ‘combat outbreak’

21 Feb 2013 The feds are descending on downtown Los Angeles to combat a dangerous outbreak of a drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis. KCAL9 went downtown in search of people who may have been exposed. John Williams started living at the Weingart shelter on LA’s Skid Row two weeks ago. Before he could be admitted, he had to undergo a screening for tuberculosis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched a coordinated effort to contain the area’s largest outbreak in a decade.

The Sandy Hook Massacre: Unanswered Questions and Missing Information by James F. Tracy

24 Dec 2012 Inconsistencies and anomalies abound when one turns an analytical eye to news of the Newtown school massacre. The public’s general acceptance of the event’s validity and faith in its resolution suggests a deepened credulousness borne from a world where almost all news and information is electronically mediated and controlled. The condition is reinforced through the corporate media’s unwillingness to push hard questions vis-à-vis Connecticut and federal authorities who together bottlenecked information while invoking prior restraint through threats of prosecutorial action against journalists and the broader citizenry seeking to interpret the event on social media. Along these lines on December 19 the Connecticut State Police assigned individual personnel to each of the 26 families who lost a loved one at Sandy Hook Elementary. “The families have requested no press interviews,” State Police assert on their behalf, “and we are asking that this request be honored.” The de facto gag order will be in effect until the investigation concludes–now forecast to be “several months away” even though lone gunman Adam Lanza has been confirmed as the sole culprit.

So much for ‘academic freedom’ in the US: James Tracy, Sandy Hook controversy: Newtown official says FAU professor should be fired

10 Jan 2013 The top elected official in Newtown, Conn., has called on Florida Atlantic University to fire communication professor James Tracy over his assertions that last month’s school massacre of 20 children and six adults may not have happened. In an emailed comment, Newtown First Selectman E. Patricia Llodra called Tracy an “embarrassment” to FAU and all educators for espousing what she called “his outlandish conspiracy theories.” “Shame on you, too, FAU, to even have someone like this on your payroll,” wrote Llodra, a former teacher. “I can assure you, sadly, that the events here in Newtown unfolded exactly as are being reported, with the horrible outcome of the violent death of 26 innocent people, including 20 children.”

Green Day: Cash Mob Floods Sandy Hook Center With Business –’It was very successful…I think a lot of people came in from out of town.’

31 Jan 2013 From 9 am to 5 pm that day, hundreds of shoppers came to the area to patronize retail businesses, whose commerce had been stunted by the traffic congestion and the lack of parking that clogged the area in the days after 12/14. One business that reflected the success of the cash mob event was The Toy Tree, a toy store at 115-A Church Hill Road… US Senator Christopher Murphy and US Representative Elizabeth Esty attended the cash mob event and visited the toy store. Betsy Paynter, the town’s economic development coordinator, helped organize the cash mob event. “It was very successful…I think a lot of people came in from out of town,” Ms Paynter said. Judging by the throng of shoppers that flooded Sandy Hook Center on Saturday, January 26, the plan to bring a “cash mob” to the compact business district was quite a success.

CNN video of police charge at Sandy Hook is not Sandy Hook

21 Jan 2013 At the words “they arrived to carnage,” the CNN Anderson Cooper report cuts to helicopter footage of seven police officers charging across a parking lot and toward a school. It is breaking news coverage of the Sandy Hook shooting just hours earlier. The three-minute report posted on the day of the shootings at the official CNN website is entitled “Tragedy Strikes at Elementary School.” But the school the police are seen ‘arriving’ to is almost certainly not Sandy Hook. It is St. Rose of Lima School, a private school a few miles away, also in Newtown.

Obama reaches out to Boehner, McConnell on sequester

21 Feb 2013 For the first time since the waning days of the “fiscal cliff” battle in late December, President Obama reached out to congressional Republican leaders to talk about next week’s impending budget cuts known as the sequester. “He placed calls earlier today to [Senate Minority Leader Mitch] McConnell and [House] Speaker [John] Boehner,” White House spokesman Jay Carney announced today. Both Boehner’s and McConnell’s offices confirmed the calls took place but neither would give details about what was discussed. [LOL, of course! Obama can't wait to give Boehner '98 percent of what he wants' again. The sequester sham will soon pass, and when it does, all 'Defense' Department pork will be restored by Obama with cuts only to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other social programs. And, because the cuts will be Obama-approved, the so-called Left will remain silent, as with his drones. See how well this will all work out for Wall Street? That was the plan from the get-go. If Obama actually gave a damn about the poor and middle class, he would have invoked the 14th Amendment in 2011 when the GOP threw a phony temper tantrum about raising the debt ceiling, since they happily raised it *countless* times during the Bush regime when Cheney said that 'deficits don't matter.' --LRP]

Sandy Hook Fallout: Proposal to Restrict Death Certificates – Requests for kids’ records dismay lawmakers –GOP Rep refers to reporters who seek info as ‘jackals’

21 Feb 2013 [Note: This is a summary of an article, written by Christopher Keating and William Weir, that appeared in Thursday's Hartford Courant (hard copy), but for some reason did not 'make it' to the Courant's website.] A Newtown official’s distress over reporters’ requests for death certificates after the Dec. 14 schoolhouse shootings has led to a bill that would restrict public access to the records for any children younger than age 18. State Rep. Mitch Bolinsky, a freshman Republican lawmaker from Newtown, testified to a committee Wednesday that legislators “need to do something.” “I was shocked, dismayed and deeply disturbed when, on Dec. 17, I got a call from the town clerk about the prospect of having a reporter standing beside her during one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the United States in Newtown looking for death certificates of children,” Bolinsky said. Bolinksky said he felt “the outrage, the pain of observing the jackals descend upon my town clerk’s office at a time of great, great community loss.” Bolinksy introduced the one-paragraph bill, which states that the copy of the public record could be restricted “when the disclosure of the death certificate is likely to cause undue hardship for the family of the child.”

Jeremy Hammond on Aaron Swartz and the Criminalization of Digital Dissent [Republished with permission from member of Jeremy Hammond's legal team]

22 Feb 2013 I am currently facing multiple computer hacking conspiracy charges due to my alleged involvement with Anonymous, LulzSec, and AntiSec, groups which have targeted and exposed corruption in government institutions and corporations such as Stratfor, The Arizona Department of Public Safety, and HB Gary Federal. My potential sentence is dramatically increased because the Patriot Act expanded the CFAA’s definition of “loss.”

Flu vaccine almost ‘completely ineffective’ in people over 65 –Hospitalizations and deaths some of highest ever recorded for elderly

21 Feb 2013 This season’s flu vaccine was almost completely ineffective in people over 65, which could explain why rates of hospitalization and death have been some of the highest ever recorded for that age group, according to early estimates released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For those over 65, the flu vaccine helped in just 9% of cases, a number too low to be statistically significant, according to a report in the CDC’s Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report released Thursday. This season’s flu hospitalization and death rates in those over 65 have been “higher than we’ve ever seen with this group,” said Michael Jhung, a CDC epidemiologist.

NYPD and Microsoft build high tech crime fighting ‘dashboard’

21 Feb 2013 …Such a hypothetical scenario may seem like something out of a futuristic crime drama, but the technology is real, developed in a partnership between America’s largest police department and Microsoft Corp., and the latest version has been quietly in use for about a year. The NYPD could make tens of millions of dollars under an unprecedented marketing deal that allows Microsoft to sell the system to other law enforcement agencies and civilian companies around the world. The city will get a 30 percent cut. The Domain Awareness System, known as the dashboard, gives easy access to the police department’s voluminous arrest records, emergency calls, more than 3,000 security cameras citywide, license plate readers and portable radiation detectors — data that raises privacy concerns for some civil liberties groups. [The upside? It's Microsoft - easy for Anonymous to hack.]

Obama to GOP: Let’s make a deal to deny Dems drone documents, and I’ll give you Benghazi info –Posted by Lori Price, www.legitgov.org

21 Feb 2013 We read, from the New York Times, the following news summary: White House Tactic for C.I.A. Bid Holds Back Drone Memos 21 Feb 2013 The White House is refusing to share fully with Congress the legal opinions that justify targeted killings, while maneuvering to make sure its stance does not do anything to endanger the confirmation of John O. Brennan as C.I.A. director. Rather than agreeing to some Democratic senators’ demands for full access to the classified legal memos on the targeted killing program, Obama administration officials are negotiating with Republicansto provide more information on the lethal attack last year on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, according to three Congressional staff members. The strategy is intended to produce a bipartisan majority vote for Mr. Brennan in the Senate Intelligence Committee without giving its members seven additional legal opinions on targeted killing sought by senators and while protecting what the White House views as the confidentiality of the Justice Department’s legal advice to the president. It would allow Mr. Brennan’s nomination to go to the Senate floor even if one or two Democrats vote no to protest the refusal to share more legal memos. [Oops, it's another politically-generated syntactical faux pas by the New York Times! (Love those!) You don't need to add the words 'full' and 'fully' when discussing Obusha's refusal to release information/documents in order to placate Obamabots. Either you share or you don't. Either you provide access or you don't. Just like your cowardly a**es refuse to call torture 'torture' and keep calling prisoners 'detainees.' 'Detainment' implies being held for a day or two, not imprisonment in a Guantanamo Bay hellhole for ten-plus years, n'est-ce pas? That's a *prisoner.* Got it?]

I don’t know who’s behind ‘Citizens for Legitimate Government’, but good for them for keeping these sorts of stories ‘out there’, in the public’s eye. These sorts of stories should not be allowed to be buried.

I’m still waiting to hear more about the Aurora massacre, and all of the suspicious aspects of that caper. And as for Sandy Hook: Don’t get me started…
