VATICAN CITY — Few eyebrows were raised last week when Pope Francis brought the Vatican’s legal system up to date by criminalizing leaks of official information and formalizing laws against sex crimes. But now that the laws have been made public, a closer look revealed that the pope has made it illegal to report sex crimes against children.

According to the new laws, revealing or receiving confidential Vatican information is now punishable by up to two years in prison, while newly defined sex crimes against children carry a sentence of up to twelve years. Because all sex crimes are kept confidential, there is no longer a legal way for Vatican officials to report sex crimes.

“We didn’t mean for this to happen, obviously,” lamented Vatican foreign minister Monsignor Dominique Mamberti. “It’s quite the papal pickle that His Holiness has placed upon our heads. Sex crimes are more illegal than ever, but technically it’s illegal to report them.” Mamberti said that the simultaneous passing of each law is merely a coincidence and insisted that the Church is not trying to protect itself against further embarrassment, but critics outside the Vatican are skeptical.

“They know exactly what they’re doing,” claims Fabrizio Perona of Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper. “They just thought nobody would notice. The Church wants to impress the world by getting tough on sex crimes, but they criminalized leaks, which is the only way anybody would ever discover their crimes. It’s genius, if you stop and think about it.”

Mamberti says plans are already being made to eliminate the loophole, but change often comes slowly to antiquated Vatican law, which is based on the 1889 Italian code. “We’re not going to let a dangerous law like this stand, but people need to understand that this is the Vatican, and there is a process here. Voting, incense, prayer. We ask the minors at risk to please be patient with us.”

Fortunately, only clergy and lay people who live and work in Vatican City are subject to the new legislation, which differs from the canon law governing the universal Catholic Church.

As the Holy See moves to clarify the law, Mamberti has warned would-be offenders within Vatican walls that they “are still subject to the most watchful eye of all: the eye of God. His judgment is greater than—oh, who am I kidding? For now, there is nothing we can do.”

Wow! Just now?!?!? If you just randomly chose some ordinary and decent guy off the streets of my city and made him pope, he would be a better pope and person than all the Popes for the entire two thousand year history of the Catholic church. No contest. He would completely outshine all the Popes and completely blow them out of the water. He would put them all to shame. Just and ordinary dude could do this if he had ordinary empathy and kindness.

Why do I feel the first poster said it is “ok” to molest a child as long as you give them therapy when your done? – REALLY? As a mother, if anybody hurt my daughter in my family, I would give them the boot so fast their head would spin. I can’t imagine what kind of a mother would not.

I was raised a catholic and come from a very catholic family, however, I must believe, that any person/group that commits such crimes and does as the vatican did, is not on the side of god.

Yes, we have adults that hurt children in all areas of society, the difference with the catholic church… they pushed it under the rug/turned a blind eye, ALLOWED it to continue, and protected the priests (or whatever) that hurt the most innocent in our society. There is NO excuse for this as there is NO excuse for not putting an immediate end to it when you find someone in your charge has committed these CRIMES. .As there is NO excuse for allowing this law of “not allowed to report a sex crime” to stand for ANY length of time. It should have been repealed immediately. – But… hows true colors of the evil vatican.

As a Psychologist, I must report that the American law regarding snitching on your clients is counterproductive. If our intent is to treat the depraved or ones who have temporally taken leave of their sanity, we only keep the abuse going by snitching. So they end up in prison where sexual abuse of all kinds is rampant. Catholic priests take an oath never to reveal what is said to them in the sanctity of the confessional. Instead they are obliged to do everything otherwise in their power to forgive, treat and heal and prevent further transgressions.
In the course of being a psychotherapist since l970, I remember one case in which I treated a teenager who had been molested by her grandfather when she was a little girl. By the time she was brought into counseling by her father who was a pastor, she was a High School Junior. She was likeable, intelligent, and highly motivated to deal with this complex issue. She was suffering from low self esteem and feeling anxious and depressed. In the course of therapy she responded positively. At the conclusion of the therapeutic relationship she announced that she was tall and empowered. At the time of this case, there was no legal imperative for therapists to report to the police. In discussions with the family, it became clear that the 85 year old grandfather was frail and in poor health. What would have been the benefit of reporting, if it had indeed been legally imperative at the time? It would simply have torn the family apart and re-traumatized the girl.
Why are we so quick to judge and condemn? I respect Pope Francis as a great intellect and a humble pragmatic man. I am appalled at the yellow journalism being displayed in some quarters. “Journalists who go for the seemingly juicy soundbites and make no effort to understand context or dig to the root of any given news item only reveal their own malicious and scurrilous natures. The Catholic Church in America responded to the crisis of victims coming forward, by instituting the most comprehensive steps imaginable toward addressing this crisis. Catholics are part of the general population and there is no difference in the incidence of sexual abuse within the church as compared with the rest of society. Much of the reported abuse has been against young boys which means we have pedophiles in the church just as we do in other groups that have access to young boys (or girls).
The Catholic Church has long been devoted to following the teachings of Christ. Within the context of various periods in history there have been mistakes made which often coincided with the transgressions and corruption of the times. Some popes were downright evil ,providing leadership for lapses in judgement and even morality. Some popes have not been very bright or let’s just say they were ignorant in keeping with the ignorance of the times. But let us not forget that the Catholic Church is the largest and most effective charitable body in the history of the world. That it has It has fed, clothed, educated, nurtured, healed and imbued children and adults with moral and ethical behavior. People who try to find holes in this impressive legacy are sadly lacking in understanding. Of course the excuse could be simple ignorance. “Where ignorance is bliss” (in writers as well as readers), it is indeed, folly to be wise.

    • Jean says:

There are many good, upstanding people in these organizations, no doubt, and many would say you do have a point. What, however, do you do about the children who are taken from homes, sexually abused and then murdered (snuff films). This is rampant. . . are we to turn a blind eye and permit it to continue? Should any child have to put up with sexual molestation? Are we to accept it as part of a Golden Age society?

      Hugs,
      ~Jean

You draw attention to a serious problem in society that only seems to be getting worse with the proliferation of child pornorgraphy. the coupling of sex with violence of all kinds and suggestive images of clothed and unclothed men, women and children. Our advertising corporations (in the context of generally deranged corporations) have run amok with explicit and subliminal messages that barrage us on TV, in movies, tabloids and even neighborhood alternative newspapers who often promote prostitution and the sexual exploitation of people of all ages.
Sexual crimes against women and gays seem to be rampant and even our men and boys who are otherwise gentle souls are using sex for relief from anxiety and depression. In this hyper stressful world we have created, especially in the workplace, people find relief in drugs (legal and illegal) with all it’s concomitant results: disinhibition of aggressive and violent tendencies, disregard for the dignity and rights of others. It has become “cool” for teenagers to drink themselves silly and drug themselves into temporary ecstasy. These practices leave them mentally, physically and spiritually depleted and weak as they await the next onslaught. Parents are too busy working two or three jobs to pay rent and put food on the table. They are exhausted and cranky from lack of sleep, rest and nourishing food. On and on. Let’s do something about it. Each one, teach one and lead by good example. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones.

The truth will set one free–if one is not allowed to speak their truth-no healing–each one has to choose their own path–if they ask for deep inner help they will be guided on the best path for themselves –keeping things private or calling the cops–both can be wise choices!!!!

A wise person once said, “By their fruits you will know them”.

I do not give any weight or credence to “lip service”, but rather closely examine what they are actually doing in their lives. If politics, how do the voting records speak to us? If banking, how non-transparent are their triple sets of books and assets, off shore? And, for humanitarians, do the continually ask for money to do their work – or do they DO IT and let the money take care of itself. We cannot be as easily “fooled” now, at least not in the usual ways. They do get a bit “wonky”, but usually the ploys cover something else up that’s being hidden and concealed. It’s time to blow the lid of literally ALL SECRETS and all things concealed and hidden. Instant transformation!

  6. LightWithinTheHeart says:

This is UTTERLY DISGUSTING. Every little girl; every little boy – are all damned to the peodophiles of Hell. May they (the filthy abusive clergy) all burn. How utterly vile, depraved… and, demonic. Jesus Christ would NEVER allow this. Truth is being put into the NWO’s deepest legal drawer, away from the light of revelations.. and, I’m NOT being ‘biblical’ here.. just, truthful. Of course, the sanctity of children – their innocence – is what ‘feeds’ these depraved individuals satanic urgings and, human lusts.

  7. Striderus says:

well not everyone knows for sure… satan is in the house…
Bible did warn you all…but no one wants to listen

  8. DB says:

I hope this is an error of some sort… and not a further descent into the hell this religion has created for so many, especially the young and innocent. I would NOT want to find out that once again, the people bringing out the truth are criminalized. This goes beyond feeding the Christians to the lions.

  9. Children should not be allowed by the world to enter the doors of hell, Do you hear me catholic parents ?

  10. Martha says:

Well it sure appears they are back-pedalling. So let’s not take Francis on face value…Nice smile- could be good actor.

  11. Peacer says:

Actually, there is something that can be done, even before they get it “fixed.” Report it anyway, immediately … and take your two years’ sentence for the sake of stopping the despicable crime.

  12. Paulino says:

  13. Paulino says:

  14. Paulino says:

‘Let the Children come unto me’…………….and do not prevent them………
    You Bastards,,,,,,,,,,rot in hell……
