Aaron Swartz keynote – “How we stopped SOPA” . . . please take the time to read the Intro below the video . . . ~J

The intro to this video from an email – Forbidden Knowledge TV:

Aaron Swartz has died of suicide at age 26. Aaron’s achievements during his short life
were staggering. At the age of 14, he co-developed RSS, the Really Simple Syndication web protocol that is the key component of much of the web’s entire publishing infrastructure.

By 19, he’d co-founded a company that would merge with Reddit, a user-generated
social news site that is now one of the most highly-trafficked news sites in the world. He founded Demand Progress, which was instrumental in fights to keep the Internet open and free, and in the battle to defeat SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act.

He developed the architecture for the Creative Commons licensing system and in 2010 he was made a fellow at Harvard’s Safra Center for Ethics.

At the time of his death, Aaron was being prosecuted by the federal government and threatened with up to 35 years in prison and $1 million in fines for the crime of – no exaggeration – downloading too many *free* articles from the online database of scholarly work, JSTOR.org

He’d used his hacking skills to download these files more quickly and despite JSTOR’s declining to press charges or pursue prosecution, federal prosecutors hit Aaron with a staggering 13-count felony indictment.

In a statement about his death, Aaron’s family and partner wrote:

“Aaron’s death is not simply a personal tragedy. It is the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach. Decisions made by officials in the MassachusettsU.S. Attorney’s office and at MIT contributed to his death.”

His death is a good reason to revisit the 1986 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the law under which he was prosecuted, since it is far too broad. It is also a good idea to take a hard look at Massachusetts Federal Attorney, Carmen Ortiz, whose office prosecuted Aaron with such recklessly disproportionate vigor, and who is reportedly considering a run for governor.

It is hard to fathom what Aaron may have continued to contribute to society had he not been bullied to death by the US Government.

I never heard of Aaron until today but my heart goes out to his family, friends and loved ones over such a great loss. How sad that Aaron thought suicide was the only way out. I pray he is contributing from the other side.

That said, please remember the US doesn’t have a government, it’s a corporation hell-bent on destroying as many people as it can. Let’s send tons of light to stop it from its mission. I believe this is the year we can and will prevail.

Thank you, Aaron, for your contribution thus far. I know you are missed and we need to make changes to stop this wasteful litigation. I just question why Ortiz was so afraid of you.

  4. Why has a government, that was put in place by the American people to do what is right for the people, to help make our lives more prosperous, more idealistic, that swore by an oath to protect and preserve our Constitution, turned against the people, to make the people and the Constitution the enemy? It seem that they have made an issue of ‘them against us’, and when they declare a war (or as they like to say, ‘A Police Action’), against a foreign country, it is not the people of a foreign country that are our enemy, it is the government of that foreign country. If the people don’t want war, but we have war anyway, who is the real enemy of the people?
AAron Swartz, and others that worked with him, has recieved far too little recognition from the people of America for the HERO that they are. Could it be because the media and our government has seen fit to surpress his story to the vast majority of the people?
Why are our leaders (just being facetious), so fearful of a tool that allows the people of the world to the fresh air truth in a mass way, that is competing with tv and newspapers, could it be as simple as the fact that they have a fearful dread for the TRUTH, and what 99% might do when they are fully awake? Kind of reminds me of blod sucking vampires, when they are exposed to the sun (TRUTH), they head for a dark place because they know it is their demise.
VIVA Aaron Swartz, and his ilk. Rise and shine your light on the corruption, caused by greed of a worthless dollar, and a hyper-inflated ego of a supposed power posistion caused by the loss of morals of men and women that have lost their spine.

A wonderfully empowering story with a terribly mixed outcome.

We’ll miss you in the ongoing battle with the tyrannically minded, Aaron. But your spirit lives on.
