Upon arriving in France for D-Day landing celebrations, Russian President Vladimir Putin and UK Prime Minister David Cameron met at a Paris airport to discuss Russian-UK relations and Ukraine. The leaders reportedly avoided a pre-talks handshake.
Putin and Cameron on Thursday met at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport, where they arrived ahead of celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the WWII allied landing operation against Nazi Germany.
However, it became clear from the start that despite celebrations, the D-Day meetings are doomed to be overshadowed by tensions over the situation in Ukraine. According to Itar-Tass, the leaders started their meeting “without a traditional handshake.”
Despite the cold start, the talks went on according to etiquette, with Putin and Cameron shaking hands “not on camera,”Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and UK Prime Minister David Cameron have discussed ways to resolve the situation in Ukraine and the prospects of “revitalizing the Russian-UK dialogue,” Peskov said. “In the course of conversation between Putin and Cameron different issues of the bilateral relations were discussed, including the topic of revitalizing the Russian-British dialogue, which is currently in a frozen state.”
