PressTV: Syria calls for anti-Israel sanctions over airstrike

Syria has sent a letter to the United Nations to protest the latest Israeli airstrike on its soil, saying the move proves the regime’s direct support for terrorists fighting against the government.

In the letter sent on Sunday, the Syrian Foreign Ministry called on the world body to impose sanctions on Israel.

It also called for taking all measures stipulated by the UN charter for preventing such aggression.

The protest letter came after the Syrian army released a statement accusing Israel of bombing its main international airport and some safe areas near the capital Damascus.

A UK-based opposition source said at least 10 explosions were heard in the town of Dimas. The Israeli army has declined to comment on the reports.

Israel has carried out several airstrikes in Syria since the start of the crisis in the country in 2011.

Tel Aviv is also said to have been training the militants fighting in Syria and providing them with financial aid.

A report recently submitted to the UN Security Council has revealed that the Israeli regime’s military has regular contacts with the Takfiri militants.

Back in March, Press TV obtained exclusive footage showing Israeli soldiers transferring wounded militants into Israel.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. More than 200,000 people have been killed so far in the conflict in Syria, according to the United Nations.

Western powers and some of their regional allies – especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey – are reportedly supporting the militants.
