At the meeting with Ukraine’s Security Council in Kiev on Wednesday, Poroshenko asked them “to consider the issue of a UN peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, which will act in accordance with an UN Security Council mandate.”
Poroshenko added that he believed the “EU policing mission” would be the best option.
“We are convinced that this will be the most effective and optimal solution in a situation when promises of peace have not been kept,” said Poroshenko.
“I held preliminary discussions about this issue with the leaders of Germany, France and Russia while in Minsk, foreseeing that the terms of the treaty would not be complied with.”
Poroshenko added that if his suggestion is approved by Ukraine’s Security Council, the government will address its allies and start official consultations.
On Tuesday, the UN’s executive body passed a resolution to approve the Minsk peace roadmap, agreed in the Belarusian capital last week by the leaders of France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine.
