EU companies may withdraw from Iran, words of support for nuclear deal not enough – FM Zarif

Iranian FM Javad Zarif told the EU energy chief that the bloc must take “practical steps” to strengthen economic ties with Tehran after Washington’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal, saying that “political support” was not enough.

“With the withdrawal of America, [Iran’s] public expectations of the European Union have increased in order to maintain the deal’s gains, and in the current context, the European political support for the accord is not sufficient,” Zarif said as he met Miguel Arias Canete, the EU’s energy commissioner, in Tehran on Sunday, the IRNA news agency reports.

To provide real support to Tehran, European countries should ramp up economic co-operation and increase investment in the country, Zarif said. While EU member states have expressed their continued commitment to the 2015 nuclear deal, known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), he suggested that ongoing developments signal otherwise.

“The announcement of the possible withdrawal by major European companies from their co-operation with Iran is not consistent with the European Union’s commitment to implementing [the nuclear deal],” Iran’s top diplomat said. . . . Click article title to continue reading.

Russia’s Navy establishes a permanent presence in the Mediterranean Sea this article seems to indicate that although Putin may not have chosen a ‘war cabinet’, he has definitely prepared for a possible war. . .

Russian President Vladimir Putin said a naval standing force, including warships with Kalibr long-range land attack cruise missiles, will be permanently deployed in the Mediterranean Sea. The statement was made at a meeting with top military officials and defense industry leaders that took place in Sochi on May 16. One of the missions is delivering strikes against terrorist targets in Syria. 102 expeditions of ships and submarines are planned in 2018. The force will go through intensive training.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet has become a much different force in comparison to what it was just three years ago. Since 2015, the year the operation in Syria was launched, it has received 15 new ships, including two frigates and six conventional submarines armed with Kalibr cruise missiles. With S-400 and S-300V4 air defense systems, Krasukha-4 electronic warfare systems and shore-based anti-ship Bastion batteries deployed on the Syrian coast, the ships in Eastern Mediterranean operate in a relatively safe environment. Kalibr missiles have already been fired from frigates and submarines at terrorist targets in Syria.

Last July, a 15-strong Mediterranean Task Force was established to be based out of Tartus, Syria’s leased naval facility. The ships provide a buffer on the southern flank of NATO. Russia needs to counter aggressive activities of the bloc in the region, including the Black Sea. Maintaining robust presence in the Mediterranean is the best way to defend Russia’s Black Sea borders.

All southern Europe, including such NATO military assets as Allied Joint Force Command in Naples, Italy, Combined Air Operations Centers in Larissa, Greece, and in Poggio Renatico, Italy, Headquarters Allied Land Command and Air Power Command in Izmir, Turkey, NATO Incirlik air base in Turkey, Graf Ignatievo and Bezmer air bases in Bulgaria used by US Air Force as well as a lot of other key NATO defense infrastructure sites happen to be within the range of Kalibr missiles installed on the platforms patrolling the Mediterranean Sea. They’ll all be knocked out with first salvos in case a Russia-NATO war starts.

The Fleet’s operations are not limited to the Black Sea basin and the Mediterranean. It is on the way of transition from a green-water naval formation to a blue water force, demonstrating the Russian flag as the ships move beyond the Strait of Gibraltar and the Suez Canal on the way to the World Ocean.

The establishment of permanent naval presence in the region can be explained by a number of rational calculations. . . . Click article title to continue reading.

Which countries are dumping the dollar and why?

The European Union is considering switching payments from the US dollar to the euro after Washington threatened to target European firms working in Iran, according to reports.

The measure may help the EU to retain one of the world’s largest markets, which was opened for trade after the historic nuclear deal signed by Tehran and the P5+1 powers (China, France, Russia, UK, US, plus Germany) in June 2015.

The idea to eliminate the role of the greenback in international settlements is not new. Aside from the EU, a number of nations have been mulling the idea. RT discussed with analysts how realistic the prospect of countries ditching the dollar is. . . . Click article title to continue reading.

Devin Nunes to leaky DOJ: No more meetings until they cough up documents

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., on Sunday said he ignored an invitation by the Justice Department to continue talks Friday with government officials about documents he seeks related to the Russia investigation because he was sure someone at the agency was leaking

“We’re not going to go to another meeting where we don’t get documents, and then the meeting leaks out,” Nunes said during an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo.

In recent weeks, Nunes subpoenaed the Justice Department for documents concerning an American who was a confidential intelligence source for Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. The subpoena came after the agency did not reply to a letter asking for details on Mueller’s probe. But the DOJ, backed by the White House, did not provide the documents, informing Nunes earlier this month that providing the information would threaten the life of the source and jeopardize national security. Instead he got a briefing with government officials, along with Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., the chairman of the House Oversight Committee.

Though Nunes and Gowdy said they had a “productive” meeting and looked forward to future discussions, Nunes did not respond to an invitation from the DOJ to answer questions he posed last week in a follow-up meeting Friday.

Nunes explained Sunday that he and Gowdy did not accept the invite because they found out they would not be receiving the documents they wanted

A Justice Department spokesperson told the Washington Examiner, “The FBI was prepared to answer his questions last week, but they can’t do that if he won’t talk to us.”

During the Fox News interview, Nunes also said that had they gone, leaks about an supposed FBI informant who had contacts with President Trump’s campaign would be pinned on them. . . . Click title to continue reading.

Bee gone: Scientists turn to robotic replacements as declining bee numbers threaten global food security

The devastating consequences of our declining bee population are being highlighted on the first ever ‘Bee Day.’ Around 80 percent of crops are pollinated by insects. RT asks if there are any alternatives to secure our food future.

According to Greenpeace, some 40 percent of commercial honeybees have been lost across the US since 2006. The decline is attributed to a rise in colony collapse disorder (CCD), a phenomenon that occurs when the majority of a colony’s worker bees suddenly disappear. The cause is unknown, although some experts offer various explanations ranging from infections, increased urbanization, the loss of habitat, and the widespread use of pesticides.

Whatever the reason, insect pollination directly contributes to the production of a huge portion of the world’s food supply, so the dramatic decline of the honeybee should be a warning: either we get to the root of the problem or develop a technological alternative capable of performing the same function.

But is a technological solution even viable? Click article title to continue reading.
